Why your bra hurts (and it’s not because of the underwire.
- The Bra Box

Let’s be real—most of us were taught how to put on a bra once in middle school and never thought about it again. We just keep "scooping and smooshing" until it looks okay under a T-shirt.
But if your current favorite bra looks like the one in this photo, you aren't actually getting the support you deserve! Here is the "layman’s terms" breakdown of what’s actually happening here:
1. The "Double Boob" (The Cup is Too Small)
See how the top of the bra is cutting into the skin, creating that little overflow? That isn't "cleavage"—it’s actually a sign that your bra cups are too small. Your breasts are looking for a place to go because they don't fit inside the "house" you’ve given them.
• The Fix: Try going up one cup letter. You’ll be amazed at how much smoother your clothes look when the bra isn't pinching you.
2. The Rising Band (The Back is Too Big)
Look at how the band is slanting upward in the back. If your bra looks like a "frown" (high in the back, low in the front), your band is too big! A loose band can't hold you up, which means your poor shoulder straps are doing all the heavy lifting. That’s why your shoulders ache at the end of the day.
• The Fix: Drop down a band size (e.g., if you’re in a 40, try a 38). It should feel snug and level all the way around your ribs.
3. The "Ghost" Lift (The Wire is Too Low)
If your bra is sitting an inch or two below where your breasts actually start, it isn't lifting anything—it’s just kind of hanging out in front of you.
• The Fix: When you put your bra on, make sure you tuck those wires (or seams) right up into the crease underneath. If it won't stay there, it’s a sign that the bra shape just isn't a match for your body.
Bottom line: You aren't "weirdly shaped"—you’re probably just wearing a size that doesn't fit your amazing body!
